Intermodal – is the use of two or more modes, or carriers, to transport freight from shipper to consignee. Special standardized containers are used for intermodal transport of cargo on trucks, stack or freight trains and ships. Multiple container sizes and types are used to move freight intermodally. Common container sizes are 20’, 40’ standard, 40’ hi-cube boxes and 53’ containers.
